Museum of Zdeněk Burian [ Museum ]

The name of the world famous painter and illustrator Zdeněk Burian will be always connected with neverending human desire for knowledge. In his case it was especially the desire for knowledge of primeval ages. Mysterious cave Šipka, a former dwelling of Neanderthal man and also a Burians playground, inspired him in his later work. He closely collaborate with paleonotlogists to reconstruct fossil plant, animals and human beings. Soon his works became famous not only in the Czech Reppublic and today you can find his paintings, describing the life in primeval period, in many galleries arround the world. More than 10,000 realistic book and magazine illustrations still fascinate children and adults. Some paintings tell us about Burians love to all people, meanwhile others warn against the misuse of human inventions or against the dangers of wars. His paintings contain much of topical interest.
In the picturesque little town of Štramberk you can find a museum named after the famous painter. The museum is visited by Burians admirers from all corners of the workd. It was founded in 1992 and the Zdeňek Burian Museum Foudation ran the museum until 1996. Since then the town of Štramberk has been the museum operator. During the tourist season some Burians works are exhibited in the museum. Every year you can see many of his paintings based on one theme. In other months the museum serves as a local gallery. Amateur painters and woodcarvers present their works to the public. During Christmas various nativity scenes are exhibited in the museum. You can also find a tourist information office in the same building.

Originally "butchers shops" built by the butcher´s guild in 1822. In the spacious hall with beamed ceiling there were 6 shops built up. Masters were selling their products there. In 1959, when Štramberk was promoted to a town, the town museum was opened in this building. Since 1992 "butchers shops" serve as a museum of Zdeněk Burian. This painter was born in 1905 in the town Kopřivnice, and shortly after his birth the Burian family moved to Štramberk, where they lived for several years. At the age of fourteen Zdeněk Burian leaves for Prague to study at the Academy of Arts which he did not finish. Yet he stayed in Prague and in 1981 he died there.
